Successfully Sourcing Pneumatic Hoists

Posted on August 29, 2018 at 10:25 pm

Lifting operations continually make demands of people and of equipment: both have to be using the latest technology and processes in order to achieve the best possible lifting processes and to remain completely safe whilst doing so. A pneumatic air hoist can help with this, providing a viable alternative to manual or electric hoists. They are often used offshore for power generation, where an electric motor would not be able to deliver. At the same time, they are in no way limited to the offshore industry and you might well find them in various different industries, perhaps along a production line or in tough environments.

What is meant by pneumatic?

Pneumatic operation uses compressed air to function. This kind of hoist may also be referred to as a compressed air hoist, or just an air hoists, which refers to the way in which they function and operate. This type of hoist can lift enormous loads, perhaps up to 100 tonnes, and will also operate in very difficult environments. They can work in high temperatures and will withstand lots of pressure, offering lifting with unlimited duty. It’s clear to see, then, why they might be used in so many different industries, and why they will withstand the kinds of conditions that are prevalent in the offshore and rigging industries.

Why choose pneumatic hoists over electric hoists?

A pneumatic hoist can offer very fast, tailored lifting solutions. This can be useful in speeding up processes, and because the hoist can lift heavier and more unusually shaped loads, it might also be beneficial in making the processes you are utilising safer for your members of staff as well. This is a primary concern of anybody running a building site, and as such, can be a big benefit for you, making it easier for you to keep track of your health and safety processes.

How to source a pneumatic hoist

You must first establish that this is going to be the right kind of hoist for you. Bearing in mind you know the benefits, it might be easy for you to justify it from a convenience point of view, however the costings need to be right too. First of all carry out a full cost analysis to make sure this is a viable option, so you know what kinds of budgets you are working to. You should also take into account the amount of servicing and maintenance your crane and hoist will need, so you can factor this into the budget as well.

Once you know your budgets, make sure they are realistic. This can involve finding a supplier who will be able to come down to your costs, which might also involve choosing a second hand hoist instead of buying new.

Make sure the supplier is a specialist in pneumatic hoists and they are leaders in their field. If you are buying used, then ask about the range they have and which brands they regularly stock. Ask them to keep you up to date, as stock will often come in regularly.

Construction Apprenticeships – Learning the Trade

Posted on May 14, 2018 at 7:15 pm

Construction as an industry is booming. There are lots of opportunities for people to get good jobs within the industry, whether it is as a scaffolder, a quantity surveyor, a labourer, an engineer, an environmental consultant or another function within construction. If you are thinking about ways to get into a construction job, have you thought about an apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship is a good way to learn whilst working and earning some money as well. You will get the chance to learn from the people who know the industry inside out, but you will also be able to earn a living (although it’s unlikely you will be paid very much). If you have just finished school or college and are weighing up your career options, think about the possibility of an apprenticeship. It is usually a pathway taken by younger people who want to learn a trade and get onto a new career path.

Taking Responsibility for Staff Safety

Posted on March 25, 2018 at 10:08 am

The safety of the people working on site is the responsibility of the manager, who must oversee processes and ensure that everything is happening safely. This person should be qualified, knowledgeable and able to make decisions on behalf of everyone on site. It’s a very important role. The remit of this person’s role includes:

  • New staff training
  • Ongoing staff training
  • Equipment inspection and repairs
  • Overseeing processes

Staff are also responsible for their own safety on a day to day basis. It is up to them to ensure they adopt safe working practices and are using all equipment correctly. If a member of staff feels they haven’t had enough training, then it is up to them to tell the relevant person, and they should not use equipment that they don’t feel comfortable with. They should ensure they have read all literature and information about a crane or machine before they operate it.

Working Safely on a Construction Site

Posted on November 30, 2017 at 9:01 pm

Construction can be a dangerous area to work in if procedures are not followed correctly. A building site is full of dangerous pieces of equipment and machinery that, if used incorrectly, could cause serious injury or even death. Health and safety is imperative for good, safe construction practices.

However, it is worth remembering that the machines used on a construction site are actually there to make processes safer. It is simply a case of using them properly. When a crane or another piece of lifting equipment is used instead of manual lifting, this is going to help protect the operator from injury.

If you are going to use a crane, make sure you receive the proper training. You should also be fully insured to work on the site. Discuss this with your employer, as it can get slightly trick when many construction workers are self employed. Make sure you receive continued training as well.

Furniture Movers – How to Lift Heavy Loads

Posted on October 31, 2017 at 11:22 pm

Furniture movers are specialist pieces of equipment that can be used to lift heavy loads, perhaps like household furniture or industrial pieces of equipment. They are often used by people like removal companies during the removal processes, to avoid dangerous heavy lifting processes. They can lift pretty heavy loads for their size, usually up to around 1,800kg.

The mover works by having skates that are slid underneath the load. The load is then positioned on the trolley or wheels correctly and safely – with some models, support rails and tension straps are available to help hold the load in place. It can then be moved by simply wheeling the mover into position.

Different wheels are available for different floor coverings. This makes moving skates suitable for use in the domestic market, where it is important to protect a customer’s home. There are also a variety of sizes and lifting heights available.

Scheduling Crane Inspections – Keeping Up to Date

Posted on August 31, 2017 at 10:26 am

Crane inspections are so important. They are a part of the law but more important than this, they will ensure your staff members are safe and can do their jobs properly. Never get behind with your crane inspections.

When you buy a new or used crane, buy from a company that will also offer you inspections. This way, they can schedule them in for you and you won’t have to find a different company and work out how reliable they are. Make sure you keep all your documentation after an inspection, as you have to keep it on record for a certain amount of time.

Cranes will usually have to be inspected every 6 months to a year. The regularity will all depend on the type of crane you have and the amount of usage it receives. Check the documentation and government regulations. However, these guidelines are a minimum and many crane owners have more regular inspections.

Reclaimed Bricks as an Alternative Stone For Your Home

Posted on May 28, 2017 at 12:37 pm

In the recent past, it has become popular for homeowners to incorporate reclaimed building materials into their properties. There are several reasons why this is the case: firstly, the reclaimed building materials are typically able to add next character to property or building (a feat that appears to be unobtainable for newer construction materials).

Secondly, it is most often the case that homeowners seek to use environmentally friendly materials when seeking to make alterations or improvements to their home and, rather than purchasing newly produced building materials or ordering bespoke construction materials, wish to use timber or stone that has been taken from derelict or deconstructed properties or buildings. Construction with Security in Mind

Posted on February 2, 2017 at 10:03 am

Security is an integral part of a building’s structure and it makes sense to take it into account during the design and build process. This will ensure that the finished product is as secure and safe as possible. Here are some things to think about:

  • Doors and windows. Make sure these are strong and made from a robust material. It could be wise to pre-fit them with security shutters or grilles, as it’s something the occupant will find useful.
  • Areas for a security guard. If a building is going to have a security guard, it may be worth building a security guard station or an office where they can work.
  • Exterior security. Construct a gate and consider using a perimeter fence to deter burglars. This will make it much harder for anyone to gain entry and it will help to secure the property further.
  • CCTV cameras. Consider installing these outside the building – they can be useful for security during the construction process too.
